SMALL GROUP PIANO LESSONS (2-6 students, grouped by age AND experience)
The best thing about group classes is that they are fun! Small group classes are a great way to learn music because there are so many great activities and games that, while helping to learn the elements of music, can also provide the social element missing from private lessons. I have found that a group atmosphere is often more beneficial and enjoyable for beginning to intermediate level students because they are motivated by their peers, but are also allowed to progress at their own rate. They also get to play exciting ensemble pieces, even as a beginner, which motivates their creativity. Music is also taught from the very beginning as something to be shared, and learning in a small group environment teaches the students to be more open and less shy about performing, building confidence. Playing together out loud with a group also helps the students with learning to keep a steady rhythm, one of the most challenging parts of music (when playing out loud in a group they can hear right away when they get off the beat).
Why Piano Class?
IT GETS RESULTS.
- I wrote my own method book! The music is much better and students learn TRUE NOTE READING (no cheating or reading by finger numbers, hand position, ear, or rote!)
- If you have a great time you will practice more and learn faster! In private lessons students progress at their own rate (which is usually slow). In group classes we progress at the rate of the fastest student. Students actually progress quicker in a group because they have more fun and are motivated by the progress of their peers.
- Ensemble playing helps a lot with rhythm, one of the hardest parts of music
- Our students have no problem playing for other people (they do it all the time!)
- Sharing music builds confidence when it is just for fun in a casual, non-threatening environment
IT’S FUN!
- Private lessons can sometimes be dry and boring. Group lessons add back in the missing social element with educational games and group activities that make learning enjoyable.
- Even beginning songs sound awesome—it’s like playing in your own band from the first day!
PRIVATE LESSONS
Private lessons are also available for intermediate to advanced students at the teacher’s discretion. With a solid foundation, students are encouraged to pursue any number of different styles of music, including but not limited to: Classical, Jazz, Rock, Pop, Blues, Electronic, Country, Contemporary Christian, and more!
We teach a variety of styles from classical to popular music. Whether you want to learn a classical sonata, rock chords, or popular sheet music, our teachers are happy to help you become the pianist you want to be. We will show you the fundamentals of sight reading, technique and theory, but we will also incorporate your favorite songs into your lessons. We have warm personalities and enjoy sharing their love for the piano with you.
It is ideal, but certainly not required for you to have a piano at home to start lessons! Most students can get a long way with just a simple and inexpensive 61-key electronic keyboard. Most of our students rent or buy small electric keyboards practice on at home. We recommend a keyboard that has regular sized keys and a touch sensitive response. A touch sensitive keyboard means if you press a key harder it will play louder and if you press a key softer it will play quieter.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT WILL I LEARN IN PIANO LESSONS?
We understand that every student is an individual, with personal musical needs and goals. We make it a priority to tailor how we teach and what we teach to your individual needs.
If you enroll here for piano lessons, your teacher will ask you about your favorite type of music, and set goals to help accomplish whatever musical aspirations you have for yourself or your child. Together, you will develop a plan to achieve your goals! We love beginners, so even if you don’t know where to begin, we can help!
WHAT STYLES OF MUSIC CAN I LEARN?
We teach all styles! Classical, Pop, Rock, Jazz, R&B, Country, Contemporary Christian, Gospel, Movie & Game Themes, Dance Music, and more–almost any genre of music from the very beginning. We combine the important fundamentals with the music YOU want to play.
ARE YOUR PIANO INSTRUCTORS QUALIFIED?
We have music degrees and over 24 years teaching experience, and most importantly we have a passion for teaching. Being a musician doesn’t automatically make you a teacher! We teach AND perform professionally so you get the best of both worlds!
We embody high values at Joy Academy of Music. Most importantly, we strive to relate our teaching to each individual student’s learning style. In addition to our teaching credentials, we have warm personalities, are extremely friendly, and strive to get to know each student and their parent on a person level.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO LEARN TO PLAY PIANO?
There is no set answer of how long it takes to learn to play piano. With regular practice, a basic level of playing can be accomplished in a few months. Most of our students take lessons on a long term basis because they want to be constantly improving and they find the lessons enjoyable.
I DON’T HAVE ANY MUSICAL BACKGROUND OR ABILITY. CAN I STILL HELP MY CHILD PRACTICE?
Yes. Even if you don’t have a musical background you can ask the teacher for advice on how to help your child practice. By simply monitoring that they are doing exercises a certain number of times per day the student will progress. Parents will occasionally sit in on their child’s music lesson to get an idea of the proper way a song should sound or how the student should be positioning their hands.
